Overhead Crane vs Gantry Crane: What's the Difference?

Choosing a lifting system for your workshop or yard? Two names come up again and again: overhead crane and gantry crane. At a glance they look almost identical — a horizontal bridge, a trolley, a hoist. But the way each one is supported changes everything: where you can install it, how much it costs, and how flexible it will be when your production layout changes.

Too many buyers only discover the difference after the steel is on the ground — when the building structure can't carry the load, or when the "portable" crane turns out to be anything but. This guide explains the real differences and gives you a practical checklist so you can spec the right machine the first time.

What is an overhead crane?

An overhead crane — also called a bridge crane or EOT crane (electric overhead traveling crane) — runs on elevated rails mounted to the building's columns and roof structure. The bridge spans the width of the bay, end trucks ride the runway beams, and the trolley with its hoist travels along the bridge to lift and move loads anywhere within the bay.

Key characteristics:

  • Supported by the building structure — no floor-mounted legs
  • Fixed travel path along the runway, back and forth across the bay
  • Frees up floor space — nothing stands on the shop floor, so forklifts, workers and other equipment keep moving underneath
  • Available in single-girder and double-girder designs; double-girder types handle the heaviest loads
  • Load capacity from under 1 ton to 100+ tons, depending on configuration

Best for: factories, workshops and warehouses that already have a steel structure — anywhere you need to move loads across the bay without giving up floor space.

What is a gantry crane?

gantry crane is essentially an overhead crane with legs. The bridge is supported by two floor-mounted legs (or one leg in semi-gantry designs) that run on wheels, casters, or ground rails. It carries its own support structure, so it does not depend on the building to hold the load.

Key characteristics:

  • Self-supporting — works indoors or outdoors, with or without an existing building structure
  • Runs on floor rails, or on wheels/casters for a mobile gantry crane that moves between work areas
  • Semi-gantry option: one leg on the floor, the other end riding on the building rail — a space-saving compromise
  • Capacity ranges from light workshop units (a few hundred kg) up to giant goliath cranes used in shipyards and container yards
  • Ideal for temporary sites: it can be dismantled and relocated as the project moves

Best for: outdoor yards, prefabrication plants, stone and panel processing, container and steel storage, and workshops without crane-rated building structure.

How to choose: a buyer's checklist

  1. Do you have a crane-rated building structure? Yes → overhead crane. No → gantry crane.
  2. Is your operation indoors or outdoors? Outdoor, or mixed → gantry crane, which shrugs off weather and needs no roof structure.
  3. Do you need to move the crane between stations or sites? Choose a mobile gantry crane on wheels.
  4. Very heavy loads in the open air? Look at goliath-class gantry cranes.
  5. Is floor space your bottleneck? An overhead crane keeps the floor clear — if the building can take it, it's the better trade-off.

Gantry systems in panel processing and woodworking
