1. Driving Mechanism & Structure

  • Chain Conveyor: Uses one or more endless chains (made of metal links) as the traction element. The chain engages with sprockets for positive, slip-free driving. The carrying surface is often attached to the chain (e.g., slats, pans, or flights).

  • Belt Conveyor: Uses a continuous loop of flexible material (rubber, PVC, or fabric) as both the traction and carrying medium. It relies on friction between the belt and the drive pulley to move.

2. Material Suitability

  • Chain Conveyor: Ideal for heavy, bulky, hot, or sharp-edged materials (e.g., castings, scrap metal, hot clinker, or automotive parts). The metal chain can withstand high impact and abrasion.

  • Belt Conveyor: Best suited for light to medium-weight, powdery, granular, or friable materials (e.g., grain, coal, sand, or packaged goods). Sharp materials can easily cut or damage the belt surface.

3. Speed & Conveying Distance

  • Chain Conveyor: Typically operates at slower speeds (usually under 1 m/s) due to the weight of the chain and the need to reduce wear on pins and bushings. Generally limited to short to medium distances because the chain's dead weight increases significantly with length.

  • Belt Conveyor: Can run at high speeds (often 2–6 m/s or more) and is ideal for very long distances (kilometers). The belt weight is distributed, and modern belting allows for extremely long single-drive runs.

4. Energy Consumption & Efficiency

  • Chain Conveyor: Has higher power consumption due to high friction between the chain and the slide rails or rollers. It requires more frequent lubrication to manage metal-to-metal contact.

  • Belt Conveyor: Generally more energy-efficient because the belt exhibits lower rolling resistance on idlers. It requires less frequent maintenance regarding friction, though it needs careful tracking.

5. Inclination (Angle of Conveyance)

  • Chain Conveyor: Can handle steep inclines (up to vertical) —especially when equipped with scraper flights or pockets. The positive drive prevents material from sliding back.

  • Belt Conveyor: Limited by the material's angle of repose; usually restricted to shallow inclines (up to 15°–20°) unless using chevron (cleated) belts. Beyond that, material tends to roll backward.

6. Synchronization & Positioning

  • Chain Conveyor: Offers precise synchronization (zero slip) because of the sprocket-chain engagement. This makes it suitable for indexing, assembly lines, and transfer stations where timing is critical.

  • Belt Conveyor: Prone to slippage under heavy loads (unless fitted with timing belts), making it less suitable for exact positioning.

7. Maintenance & Lifespan

  • Chain Conveyor: Requires higher maintenance—regular lubrication of pins, bushings, and rollers, as well as frequent tension adjustments to compensate for chain elongation (stretch) over time.

  • Belt Conveyor: Maintenance focuses on tracking (alignment) and splicing. The belt surface wears out over time but generally requires less intensive mechanical lubrication than a chain system.
